Track Name: Resolution
never believed in second chances
i was too concerned with what romance is
i bit my tongue and tied up every thought
i bound them and i muted them and i left them to rot
lost my focus, lost my way
lost your trust when i said it was okay
so i stumbled and we fell so hard
i swear i have more than just a bandaid to heal the scars

let me try show you, oh how much you mean
i can be the green man and you the may queen
we can grow a garden, when the season thaws
maybe soon you'll even parler avec moi
lost my focus, lost my way
lost my reason to get up each day
i know i panicked and i burned your heart
but will you please let me rekindle what is now so charred?

i never believed in second chances
i was too concerned with what romance is
i know we won't be wasting our time
you washed away every doubt in my mind
so i stumbled and we fell so hard
i know i panicked and we fell so hard
but when i first saw you, i fell so hard
and now i can promise you that we are going far
Track Name: Ring of Salt (Youth Culture Dummy version)
your jaw's been shut since the day that you could talk
and you sat down when you learned to run away
now you've a taste for a different kind of waste
and you wish that you could give your smile away

please be
gentle
please be gentle when you go
give me
the sad news
and we'll give each other better news soon

if you wake up while the heat of summer sin
dries the grass that you decide to lay upon
you'll peel your skin and you'll light another grin
watch the ashes reach so desperate for the sun

have i found what i want?
am i satisfied with where i place the fault?
another broken heart is pouring through my fingertips
and as it's falling it becomes a ring of salt

please be
gentle
please be gentle when you go
give me
the sad news
Track Name: The Apple Stem
twist and turn the apple stem and
you'll see what you want to see
you won't hear what you need to hear
the flower petals that you picked
were better left upon those flowers

and the lies you choose to live by
grow more beautiful each time
i see you but you reflect them
like hundred year old silverware
that's never seen a polish or a wash

and oh, i know
you see what you want to see
and lord, it shows
is this really who you want to be?

not all apples are so sweet and
there's a bit of arsenic*
in every apple that you eat and
darling you were once a treat but
now you're nothing but a core and seeds

and now i know
you see what you want to see
and lord, it shows
is this really it?
is this really who you want to be?

*scientific accuracy note: it should be cyanide. whoops
Track Name: Goodbye, John Ryle
ten or twenty beautiful strays
playing in the yard
perforated ceilings
and stairs that leave some scarred
how can i say this?

goodbye, john ryle
how about
one more headache
for old time's sake

sleeping in a closet
and dishes that respawn
you ate up all my money
years of my life are gone
to anxiety and asbestos

goodbye, john ryle
how about
one more headache
for old time's sake

the garbage piles are in the distance

goodbye, john ryle
goodbye, john ryle!
how about
one more headache?
for old time's sake
Track Name: The Road There
of all that we know,
how much of it's useful?
if i keep on making mistakes

if i can just change who i am
then who am i?
am i just inconstant or fake?

trying and trying
is trying my patience
a virtue without much reward

if the goal is the road's end
but the road there is endless,
i'll walk it for walking its sake

when job knew his task,
he was stoic and steadfast
and sisyphus took up his hill

though i wasn't given
a celestial trial,
my trials are testing me still

testing and testing
is testing my temper
as fragile as untempered steel

if the goal is the road's end
but the road there is endless
there's time to get used to the chill
Track Name: Round the Root
i watch trains enter tunnels
like worms in earth
and i wish i could disappear

i could think of a thousand ways
to change my life
but i would still be here

though it gets old soon
i always find that i keep dancing round the root
dancing, spinning like a pinwheel
ever dancing round the root
i keep dancing round the root

like a sickness, long and low
my thoughts are still
and pool in sad, familiar ways

dull words repeating, time
and time, and time again
it's time to try another phrase

why should i run in place?
when instead i keep dancing round the root
dancing, spinning like a pinwheel
ever dancing round the root
i keep dancing round the root

oooo, like a pinwheel
round the root
oooo, ever dancing
round the root
Track Name: Book of the Lethe
the night rolled in like your favorite blanket, hanging in the breeze
you let me see what you were made of, tears and torn up knees
you dipped your feet into the current, and told me it was fine
i didn't think you'd ever try to change my mind

so down, down, down to the river bed
i saw you hang your head
and down, down, down swimming far too deep
i gave you a heart that you couldn't keep

frozen typewriters sang to us with pages made of leaves
our bodies blue like our sad demeanor, i knew you don't believe
we found the book you were looking for, sitting where it sank
you picked it up and turned the cover, every page was blank

down, down, down to the river bed
i saw you hang your head
down, down, down swimming far too deep
i made you a promise i couldn't keep

down, down, down to the river bed
i saw you hang your head
down, down, down swimming far too deep
i gave you a heart that you couldn't keep
Track Name: Pressed Flowers (Lilies of the Valley)
i sit along the bridge, i throw a stick into the creek
but it won't come out of the other side
just think of better days, they can bring to you a tear or two
the price you have to pay to finally be satisfied
and i cannot forget
but i don't exactly remember

tuck away the years, left in a tome from your old home
when you find them again, what will you care?
i sit along the bridge between today and yesterday
the river sings, "you won't come out the other side!"
and i cannot forget
but i don't exactly remember

the memories are pressed together
flattening with age
it's getting hard to tell between the
petal and the page

…between today and yesterday
…bring to you a tear or two

because the binding tears or the water wears
what i wished would last forever!
if i cast a light, or i hold too tight
it'll crumble altogether
so i will not forget -
but i don't exactly remember
yet.
Track Name: Seasons of Giving
i have one request this year
show me there are others who value
the things that i value
love in all the ways that i do

others who appreciate
every breath they breathe out and in
those who forgive everything
every season is for giving

is there someone else out there,
lying in the snow, talking to air?
pleading with the moon
i hope it's you
i hope it's you
Track Name: Wrapping Paper
frozen fingertips
feel the air, it makes you think of her
what she means to you

what did you get her?
rosy cheeks and frozen windshield wipers
you think she'll understand

and you say,
"i can't wrap it up
but this year, i gave you everything"

where are you this year?
far from home, driven there by a sense of fear
and your mom's mini-van

running low on hope
you put your check in your tank and the next day
it's ten cents cheaper

and you say,
"i can't wrap it up
but next year, i'll give you everything"

frozen fingertips
all is well, somewhere there is a fireplace
with those who love you
Track Name: Eve
i dropped my glass of wine
when your brother spoke
between his tears

i lost my sense of time
by the fireplace
it was almost the new year

i watched it slip away
i watched it slip away

i thought the spinning lights
were for the holiday
but you loved to prove me wrong

i saw the party end
as it came to me
i think i loved you all along

i watched them slip away
i watched them slip away

i walked into the cold
without my jacket on
oh, how you would have sighed

i lost my sense of place
in the driveway

i lost my sense of place
oh, why did i drive you away?

i watched you slip away
Track Name: Northfield
still crystal
cheek against the glass
tie up your boots
go through the door and
smile

white hillside
maple syrup boils
bring in the wood
joy is simple
feet by the fire and
sleep
